Between Beach and Bush

Rose Webber was born in Nelson, New Zealand in 1935. The world of the visual arts has been an on going fascination to her thanks to an inspired art teacher, Claudia Jarman, at secondary school. Charlton Edgar at Auckland College of Education gave further encouragement which led to training in Dunedin in art and craft teaching. This was followed by joining the art advisory service to schools founded by Gordon Tovey. Years of teaching, travelling, making a home and bringing up children intervened before Rose began to concentrate on her own painting. For her, landscape has usually been the starting point. She considers colour to be important too. Rose works in acrylic and oil on canvas. Making something beautiful from the marks on the canvas is the challenge.
