As a visual artist and surfer looking back, the 60’s era of longboarding now has a nostalgic twist to it but the styles, the fashion, the colours that emerged during that era provide fertile source material for image making.
This screenprint is a homage to those halcyon days.

Tony Ogle was born in Auckland in 1959. After completing the AIT Graphic Design Diploma Course in 1979, he spent time in Northland working with artist Tom Burnett, producing silk screen prints that celebrated the coastal scenery of Northland. Also well known at this time was a series of screen prints inspired by the east coast of Great Barrier Island. After spending several years travelling the world, Tony re-established himself in Auckland, and in the early 90's produced a series of work depicting the Coromandel Peninsula. Here he discovered a wealth of subject matter which over an eighteen month period he condensed into an exhibition of paintings and prints. Ogle continues to be drawn to locations off the beaten track, mostly untouched niches of the land and coastline that convey a quality of timelessness to him. To encapsulate that 'sense of place' is what he strives for in his work. Having now traveled he feels even more sharply aware of the uniqueness of what naturally exists in his home country.
