Merthyr Ruxton completed a Diploma of Visual Communications in Wellington in 1975, studying graphics, print-making, photography and life drawing. In 1976 and 1977 she worked as a freelance illustrator in Europe. She continued to create works on paper, mainly in gouache, and to work on ceramics, with an informal exhibition at the New Zealand Embassy in Santiago, Chile. She has exhibited extensively across Auckland in both a solo and collaboration capacity. Her work is abstract and gestural in nature and the medium she currently uses is oil paint on gesso on board.
