Born in Sydney, Australia in 1951, Mutch moved to New Zealand in 1971. For seven years he studied and trained under Michael Smither in his New Plymouth studio. Tom worked as Education Officer and Mural Supervisor at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery from 1980 to 82. He began exhibiting in 1973 but did not become a full time artist until 1983. Mutch has travelled extensively and has exhibited in London and New York and continues to have shows in Australia. He currently lives in Kuaotunu, Coromandel Peninsula. He describes himself as a symbolist neo-realist and a colourist by nature producing paintings, silk screen prints and sculptures in metal, wood and stone.
