Gouache on Paper Original - Height 79cm x Width 99cm
Born in Montreal, Canada, 1964, Steven moved to New Zealand in 1970. He passed School Cert and University Entrance Exams while at school, but with indifferent marks. Then Steven got accepted into the Auckland University of Fine Arts in 1984 but failed. He managed to survive living on Waiheke Island by doing odd jobs. He later traveled, staying in Crete. During this time he generally did the Starving Artist thing. In 2006 Steven returned to N.Z and continues to paint his unique New Zealand landscapes. Each painting takes many, many hours and most of his work is painted using Gouache paint, an early form of paint medium mixing raw pigment with gum Arabic. This paint gives a unique chalky look to his work. Steven describes his style as typographical cubism, inviting the viewer into and through the landscape, not just to observe it from a distance.
