Michael Smither

Michael Smither was born in New Plymouth in 1939 and attended Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University from 1959 to 1960. He is an artist, musician, conservationist painter, sculptor and printmaker Smithers' paintings tell a story. He believes that the way an artist is feeling is the way the artist paints. He paints the way he sees things, which changes all the time depending on where he is standing. Smithers' maintains his paintings are autobiographical. His more recent works explore his interest in colour and its relationship to sound and to abstract shapes. His work can be found in public and private collections worldwide.
