Hamish Haldane

Chance has been the theme at the centre of my paintings for many years now. What influences me is the chance in life, the chaos, random events, accident and opportunity that form the interplay and creation of life. My painting focuses on this theme on both a universal and personal scale. For the universal I explore chance as it relates to broader aspects of human existence, and the fragile nature of this existence. We exist because of chance occurrences - and you, and everyone and everything around you, can never be free from the influence of chance. On a personal scale I consider what chance has delivered to my life, my response to it and what I have learnt. To represent chance I use a language that illustrates both finite and infinite symbols of my relationship to the world or more immediately to the people around me
